Experience the Spectacle of the Great Wildebeest Migration in Africa with Travel Mumwa
If you’re a safari enthusiast with a passion for adventure, experiencing the Great Wildebeest Migration in Africa should be on your bucket list. This incredible natural event occurs annually and is one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles in the safari world. It takes place in the East African countries of Kenya and Tanzania and involves millions of wildebeest, zebras, antelopes, and other hoofed mammals.
The migration begins in the renowned Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and culminates in Kenya’s magnificent Maasai Mara Reserve. Contrary to popular belief, this migration isn’t confined to a specific season; it’s a year-long affair that unfolds in a series of captivating phases.
January-March: The Birthing Season The migration kicks off in January when the animals converge at the Ngorongoro Conservation area in Tanzania. This region offers ample grass and water, creating the perfect conditions for birthing. During this period, over 40,000 calves are born in just three weeks, adding a heartwarming element to the migration’s drama.
April-June: Heading North In April, the animals begin their journey northward, starting in Central Serengeti and gradually making their way to the western corridor.
June: Grumeti River By June, they arrive at the banks of the Grumeti River, marking a significant stage of their migration. Here, the travelers can witness some incredible wildlife moments as the herds navigate the river’s challenges.
July-October: The Mara River Crossing The most thrilling part of the Great Migration occurs between July and October when the wildebeest and company arrive at the Mara River. This is when you can witness the dramatic river crossings, as the animals brave crocodile-infested waters and predators on the prowl.
To fully enjoy this spectacular event, it’s essential to travel with a reliable safari company and have a well-planned itinerary in place.
